Online dating can be a real used car lot of models, with various enticements and rewards for looking and showing interest.

We all have great things about ourselves:

I am well read and have a great capacity for conversations.

I can be involved with people in their personal lives without being an overbearing opinionated person.

I like summer days.

Rain makes me feel sad but in a good way.

The first sunny spring day makes me happy.

Stray dogs scare me.

From the above statements about me have you formed an opinion of me?

Sure you have.

People usually have their "fight or flight" instinct on, even when viewing pictures of others or simply reading what someone has written about themselves.

Commonality and familiarity make us feel more relaxed, and safer, than when faced with differences and the unexpected.

And you need to understand that what a person writes about themselves is not "all revealing". A profile, if not well thought out, becomes a short story of misdirection and symbolism that is open to interpretation.

Asking direct questions will help to reveal to you the person behind the profile.

What do you like about your job?

What do you like about where you live?

How many of your friends are married?

Have you ever had a good blind date?

What would your soulmate have that you don't?

What was the last magazine you read?

Who is your favorite author?

What is the biggest change that happened to you from graduating high school until now?

Why did your last relationship end?

What would your mother think of you using online dating?

Your first contact email should include at least one of the questions above. Open ended questions allow someone to respond more freely than a question that can be answered with a simple yes or no.

Remember, there is a person behind the profile that has not been revealed. It's your job, your need, to ask the questions that allow an online introduction to become the inner look inside the person's personality
